Saturday, November 30, Minneapolis based artist Michael Flora presents the première of Dynamical Systems for Twelve Loudspeakers, a computer-generated 12-channel sound piece in the 2800 sq ft gallery space of Co Exhibitions, Minneapolis. Inspired by systems from the natural world, the work examines the emergent sonic behavior that arises from the intersection of science, mathematics, music, and art.
Dynamical Systems for Twelve Loudspeakers stems from research into generative approaches to composition. The work uses processes exhibited in such natural phenomena as weather patterns, the flow of water, animal population dynamics, and structure of coastlines as conceptual starting points. Through computer sound synthesis and multiple loudspeakers the performance abstracts and redefines the exhibition space through sound.
Michael Flora is a fiscal year 2019 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
